Lending Section

This section allows readers to borrow books from the library. After obtaining membership, members are permitted to borrow up to two books for a maximum of two weeks, excluding holidays. A special service is available for senior citizens, allowing them to borrow up to four books for a maximum of 30 days.

The section houses nearly 70119 fiction and nonfiction books in all three languages, with 14,020 active members. All services in this section are fully automated to ensure an efficient and streamlined experience.

Reference Section

If you need further information on a specific subject or event, you should visit the Reference Section. Library membership is not required; simply presenting a National ID card or another acceptable form of identification is enough to verify your identity. The information available in this section is highly valuable for students pursuing higher education, as well as for scholars and professionals involved in various research fields. Additionally, this section offers photocopying services for any documents you may need.

Reading Section

This section provides essential daily information both domestically and internationally. Here, you can access daily and weekend newspapers in Sinhala, Tamil, and English. Additionally, you will find a selection of popular magazines, periodicals, government publications, as well as materials from non-governmental organizations and community information.

Cataloguing Section

This section handles the technical aspects of purchasing, acquisition, and cataloguing all library materials. The Kandy Municipal Council allocates approximately 10-15 million each year for the purchase of library materials. Cataloguing is done according to the Dewey decimal classification system, and all bibliographic data is entered into the library’s automation system.

Binding Section

Books are bound through several processes before being sent to sections and branch libraries. This is a valuable preservation method for books that have been damaged due to heavy use by members and patrons. The binding process is also applied to damaged books and rare collections.

Study Hall

Students preparing for exams, those pursuing higher education, and professionals can bring their personal notes and books to this section to their studies.

Mobile Library

The mobile library is a community service program designed to bring library resources to people in areas with limited access to library facilities. Launched in 2002 with a bus donated by the Lions Club, this service operates on a prearranged schedule, visiting selected institutions and areas.

The mobile library offers free service to the following charitable organizations: Mavilmada Elderly Home, Dodamwela Deaf and Dumb School, Jayawickrama Children's Home, and Sigiti Sevana Children's Home. For other institutions and areas, the service is available at discounted rates.

Additionally, the service is accessible to 36 centers within the city limits for an exclusive membership fee.

Braille Library

This section maintains a collection of Braille books, audiobooks, and CDs specifically for visually impaired readers. Facilities are provided for borrowing and listening to these materials. It is also the only active Braille library in the Central Province. In addition to providing information, the section organizes various extension service programs aimed at supporting the welfare of visually impaired readers.
