OUR HISTORY
The Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) serves as the local governing body for Kandy, Sri Lanka's second-largest city and the historic capital of the Kandyan Kingdom. Established under the Municipalities Ordinance of 1865, the council held its inaugural meeting on March 20, 1866, making it the second-oldest municipal council in the country.
Historical Background
Initially, the KMC was overseen by the Government Agent of the Central Province. This arrangement continued until 1939, when Sir Cudah Ratwatte became the first elected Mayor of Kandy. The council's responsibilities encompassed town planning, road construction, building regulations, and sanitation services. In 1870, the Kandy Town Hall was established at its current location on Hill Street, in a building known as Dunuwille Walawwe. This structure, characterized by colonial architectural features such as a porte-cochère and high ceilings, provided a venue for public meetings and housed the council's administrative offices.

Governance
The council is divided into 22 wards for administrative purposes, each represented by elected officials. The Municipal Commissioner oversees the day-to-day operations of the council's 16 departments, which include services such as waste management, road maintenance, and public health.
