78th National Independence Day Celebrations "It has been 78 years since our motherland became an independent state after escaping from the rule of the British imperialists. The 78th Independence Day Celebrations organized by the Kandy Municipal Council were held on the morning of February 04, 2026, at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Mahamal, Kandy, under the patronage of the Hon. Governor of the Central Province, Professor Sarath Abhayakoon. Floral tributes were also paid to the statue of His Excellency D. A. S. Senanayake, who did a pioneering work in the cause of independence for Sri Lanka. The welcome speech was delivered by the Municipal Commissioner, Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, and the girls of Hemamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy, sang the National Anthem and the D. A. S. Senanayake Memorial Anthem. Received. The Hon. Governor and Hon. Mayor of Kandy, Mr. Chandrasiri Wijeyanayake delivered guest lectures, while the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Basnayake Nilame of the Natha and Patthini Devalayas, the Deputy Mayor of the Kandy Municipal Council, the Leader of the Opposition and a group of municipal councillors, the Chief Secretary of the Central Province, the Kandy City Agent and a group of senior government officials of the province, and representatives of public and private institutions were present on this occasion.
This program was organized by the Municipal Executive Committee under the leadership of the Kandy Municipal Commissioner, Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe.
