The donation of a consignment of waste collection bins worth nearly Rs. 1.3 million by JICA for use during the Kandy Esala Perahera Festival was held today, 2026.08.16, at the Royal Palace Gardens premises, with the participation of a delegation from JICA and Mr. Chandrasiri Wijayanayaka, Honorable Mayor of Kandy. Also present at this event were Municipal Councillors Mr. Namal Korale Gedara and Mr. E.M.L. Sahabdeen representing the Standing Committee on Environment and Solid Waste Management, Municipal Commissioner of Kandy Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, and Municipal Mechanical Engineer Mr. Namal Dhammika Dissanayake. The team of officers from the Municipal Solid Waste Management Department also participated in the handing over of these bins, which are designed for source segregation of waste. The Mayor also expressed appreciation for the support provided by JICA for the operational activities carried out by the Kandy Municipal Council for the Kandy Esala Perahera.
