The 2026 International Wheelchair Day celebration program was held on the 1st of last month at the D.S. Senanayake Public Library premises in Kandy under the patronage of the Honorable Mayor of Kandy, Chandrasiri Wijeyanayake.
This program, which was held under the theme "A Space for Wheelchairs through Access", was organized by the "Ayitheen Udesa Api - Kandy" organization in collaboration with the Kandy Municipal Council, and a group of people with special needs are members of this organization.
The opening of a public sanitation facility system built for the use of the special needs readers using the Municipal Library, with the financial contribution of the "Ayitheen Udesa Api" organization (Kandy) and the labor contribution of the Industries Department of the Kandy Municipal Council, also took place on this occasion.
The Hon. Deputy Mayor of Kandy, Mr. Ruwan Galapitiya, along with Municipal Councilors Mrs. Fatima Masthura and Mr. Rizan Mohamedy, Chief Industrial Engineer Mrs. Chamipika Ilangasinghe, and Zone 01 Works Superintendent Mrs. Nilanka Abeysinghe were also present at this event. On the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, the Municipal Library Department along with the Chief Librarian H.M. T. Herath had implemented this program.
