Due to the El Niño condition currently affecting the island, several areas are facing severe drought. Accordingly, in response to the request made by the Kandy Municipal Council to the generous citizens of Kandy to donate 5-liter water bottles, the collected water bottles were distributed to the Medagama Pradeshiya Sabha area in the Monaragala District on the Full Moon Poya Day which fell on the 26th of September 2026.Water was distributed to the Medagama Divisional Hospital, Medagama Ayurvedic Hospital, Medagama Primary School, Medagama Pradeshiya Sabha and to the people of all villages in the Medagama Pradeshiya Sabha area including Bibilla Medagama, Nannapurawa, Palle Arawa, and Badalkumbura villages.This program was implemented under the guidance and supervision of Kandy Municipal Commissioner Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, with the full advisory support of Hon. Mayor of Kandy Mr. Chandrasiri Wijayanayake, Deputy Mayor Mr. Ruwan Galapitiya, and Leader of the Opposition Mr. Lalantha Sanjeewa Peiris.
This program was organized by the Urban Emergency Raid Unit and a group of municipal staff also participated in the water distribution event.
