Our Mission
The mission of the Veterinary Department is to make the life of the urban population more comfortable by providing the public with meat within the city limits in a hygienic manner according to the required standards, constantly monitoring and administering it, preventing the spread of rabies and other animal diseases in the city, immunizing and treating animals, and properly administering the Kandy Central Market and other municipal council public markets.

Issuing licenses for places where meat is sold within the municipal limits in accordance with Section 05 of the Cow Slaughter Ordinance.
Issuing licenses for the sale of meat brought from outside the meat testing laboratory.
Testing meat received at the meat testing laboratory.
Inspecting places where meat is sold within the municipal limits.
Taking necessary measures to identify persons selling meat without a license.
Supervision of the purchase of meat for hotels, restaurants, tourist resorts, etc. within the municipal limits.
Taking legal action against places where meat is purchased or stored that is unfit for human consumption.
Public Market Administration
Maintaining the public market in a hygienic and beautiful manner.
Removing temporary unauthorized vendors in front of the public market.
Supervision duties in the section of the central market where vegetable and fruit retail space is provided.
Taking legal action against shop owners who have placed goods in a way that blocks the market pedestrian paths.
Registering shop employees and updating records.
Taking legal action against tenants who have employed employees without registering.
Identifying, ordering and obtaining goods required for market maintenance.
Public Market Staff Administration.
The main responsibility of this division is to prevent the spread of rabies in the city and to act in accordance with the Rabies Ordinance No. 13 of 1941 and the Dog Registration Ordinance No. 26 of 1938, including related tasks.
Conducting rabies vaccination camps covering all Grama Niladhari Divisions within the Municipal Council limits. (Domestic and stray)
Registration of dogs.
Conducting awareness workshops for school children and the public regarding the disease.
Taking necessary action on complaints received regarding dogs suspected of being infected with rabies.
Referring dogs suspected of having contracted the disease and died to the Rabies Diagnostic Unit of the University of Peradeniya for examination.
Performing sterilization surgeries to control the dog/cat population.
Taking necessary action based on public complaints regarding the breeding of dogs that are a nuisance to the public and the administration of rabies vaccinations.
